Scientific Name:  Carinotetraodon travancoricus

Pea Puffer (Dwarf Puffer) Care Guide

Common Name: Pea Puffer / Dwarf Puffer

Scientific Name: Carinotetraodon travancoricus

Size: ~1 inch (2.5 cm)

Lifespan: 3–5 years

Temperament:

Semi-aggressive despite tiny size. They can nip fins and may bully slow or long-finned tankmates. Best kept alone or in a species-only group.

Tank Size:

5 gallons minimum for 1

10–20 gallons for a small group (heavily planted)

Water Parameters:

Temperature: 74–82°F

pH: 6.5–7.5

Soft to moderately hard water

Tank Setup:

Heavily planted tank with lots of hiding spots (plants, driftwood, rocks). Break line of sight to reduce aggression.

Diet:

Carnivorous. They will not eat flakes or pellets reliably.

Feed:

  • Snails (important for dental health)
  • Frozen/live bloodworms
  • Brine shrimp
  • Daphnia

Tank Mates:

Best kept alone or in species-only tanks.

If attempted: very fast fish (like some rasboras), but not guaranteed safe.

Behavior Notes:

Very intelligent and interactive. They recognize their owner and will “hunt” their food. Known for their curious personality.

Breeding:

Possible in captivity. Eggs are laid in plants or moss. No parental care.

Care Level:

Moderate (due to diet and aggression)

If you want, I can help you set up the perfect tank layout or suggest tank mates that actually have a chance of working.
