Freshwater sharks are a group of active, often brightly colored aquarium fish that are popular for their shark-like body shape and sleek swimming. Despite the name, they are not true sharks; they are freshwater species in the carp family. These fish are best known for their energetic behavior, territorial tendencies, and striking appearance.

Popular Types:

  • Red Tail Shark (Epalzeorhynchos bicolor) – Black body with a bright red tail; territorial and best in larger tanks.
  • Rainbow Shark (Epalzeorhynchos frenatum) – Dark body with red/orange fins; active and may chase tankmates if space is limited.
  • Bala Shark (Balantiocheilos melanopterus) – Silvery, larger species; peaceful in groups but grows up to 12 inches, requiring a big tank.
  • Albino Rainbow Shark – Lighter variant of the rainbow shark; same care requirements.
