South & Central American Cichlid


South American cichlids originate from the Amazon River basin and surrounding waterways in countries such as Brazil, Peru, Colombia, and Venezuela. These fish are known for their intelligence, strong personalities, and often vibrant coloration. Many species grow medium to large and prefer warm, soft, slightly acidic water conditions.

They typically thrive in aquariums with driftwood, plants, and hiding spaces that mimic natural river habitats. Some species can be peaceful while others become territorial, especially during breeding. Popular South American cichlids include Oscars, Angelfish, Discus, Severums, and Green Terrors. Tank size requirements vary widely depending on the species, but many require aquariums of 55 gallons or larger.


Central American cichlids are native to freshwater rivers and lakes from southern Mexico through Panama. These fish are generally hardy and adaptable but are well known for their territorial and sometimes aggressive behavior. Because of this, they are often kept with similarly sized or robust tankmates.

 Most Central American species prefer slightly harder and more alkaline water compared to South American cichlids. Aquariums should include rocks, caves, and open swimming space to accommodate their natural behaviors. Common examples include Jack Dempsey, Convict Cichlid, Firemouth Cichlid, and Red Devil. Many of these fish grow fairly large and require tanks of at least 55–75 gallons or larger depending on the species.

These cichlids are popular among aquarists because of their bold colors, interesting behavior, and ability to recognize their owners over time.
