Danios (Danio spp.) – Freshwater Aquarium Fish

Danios are small, hardy, and active freshwater fish, popular for beginners and community aquariums. They are schooling fish with vibrant colors and patterns, adding movement and energy to the tank.

Popular Types:

  • Zebra Danio (Danio rerio): Classic striped pattern, very active and hardy.
  • Leopard Danio (Danio rerio “Leopard”): Spotted variant of the Zebra Danio, equally active.
  • Pearl Danio (Danio albolineatus): Subtle pearly sheen with gentle stripes.
  • Glowlight Danio: Bright, neon-like horizontal stripe; adds color to community tanks.

Care Guidelines:

Tank size: Minimum 10 gallons for small schools, larger tanks preferred for more activity.

  • Temperature: 70–78°F (21–26°C)
  • pH: 6.5–7.5
  • Diet: Omnivorous; eats flake food, micro-pellets, and occasional live/frozen foods like brine shrimp or daphnia.
  • Behavior: Peaceful, very active, and schooling; best kept in groups of 5 or more to reduce stress.
