Freshwater Aquarium Catfish

Freshwater catfish are a diverse group of peaceful, bottom-dwelling fish popular in community aquariums. They vary widely in size, color, and behavior but generally help keep tanks clean by scavenging leftover food and algae.

 Popular Types:

  • Corydoras species: Small, peaceful, and schooling; ideal for community tanks.
  • Plecos (e.g., Bristlenose, Clown Pleco): Excellent algae eaters; some species grow large.
  • Glass Catfish (Kryptopterus vitreolus): Transparent and schooling; peaceful mid- to bottom-dweller.
  • Whiptail / Farlowella Catfish: Long, slender, and elegant; slow-moving and peaceful.
  • Synodontis species: Active and sometimes larger; may require hiding spots.

 Care Guidelines:

  • Tank size: Depends on species (10 gallons for pygmy species, 50+ gallons for larger plecos).
  • Temperature: 72–82°F (22–28°C), depending on species.
  • pH: 6.0–7.5, slightly soft to neutral water preferred.
  • Diet: Most are omnivorous; accept sinking pellets, flakes, algae wafers, and occasional live/frozen foods.
  • Behavior: Generally peaceful; best kept with compatible tankmates and in groups for social species.
