Plecos & L-Number Catfish (Loricariidae Family)

Plecos are bottom-dwelling catfish known for algae-eating, unique patterns, and armored bodies. L-number plecos are rare or newly discovered species identified by “L” codes.

Temperament: Peaceful

Size: 3–24+ inches (huge variation)

Tank Size: 20–125+ gallons (species dependent)

  • Rubber Lip Pleco
  • L046 Zebra Pleco (rare, expensive)
  • L134 Leopard Frog Pleco

Water Parameters:

Temperature: 72–86°F (some species prefer warmer)

pH: 6.0–7.5

Soft to moderately hard water

Diet:

Omnivore – algae wafers, sinking pellets, vegetables (zucchini, cucumber), plus protein (especially for L-numbers like Zebra Plecos)

Tank Setup:

Driftwood is essential (many species need it for digestion)

Caves/hiding spots are a must

Moderate flow and good filtration

Low to moderate lighting

 

Special Notes on L-Numbers:

  • “L” = Loricariidae classification system for unidentified/imported species
  • Many are wild-caught and sensitive
  • Some are algae eaters, others are carnivorous (important!)
