CRYPTOCORYNE SPIRALIS var. spiralis is a common aquatic plant in India, where it frequently grows as a weed in rice fields. This species was the first described CRYPTOCORYNE SPIRALIS in 1830 and holds a unique place in aquatic plant history.

Known for its resilience, CRYPTOCORYNE SPIRALIS is considered one of the most 'primitive' species in the genus, notable for having a septum that closes the kettle—a trait not seen in other Cryptocoryne species, though it does appear in the related genus Lagenandra.
