Description

Frontosa Cichlid

The Cyphotilapia frontosa, commonly known as the Frontosa Cichlid, is a large and iconic species native to Lake Tanganyika in East Africa. It is famous for its bold black vertical stripes, bluish body coloration, and the large hump on the forehead of mature males.

Frontosas are slow-moving but powerful predators that naturally live in deep waters of Lake Tanganyika, often in groups near rocky drop-offs.

Care Requirements

  • Temperament: Semi-aggressive but generally calm for a large cichlid
  • Diet: Carnivore (pellets, shrimp, krill, frozen foods)
  • Temperature: 76–80°F
  • pH: 7.8–9.0
  • Minimum Tank Size: 75–125 gallons
  • Adult Size: 10–14 inches

Tank Setup

  • Large aquarium with open swimming space
  • Rocky caves and structures for shelter
  • Hard, alkaline water conditions
  • Best kept in small groups (5–6+)

Frontosas are mouthbrooders, meaning females carry fertilized eggs and fry in their mouths for protection until the young are ready to swim on their own.
