Description
Apistogramma cacatuoides “Double Red” is a popular dwarf cichlid prized for its vivid red fins and bold personality. Native to the Amazon basin in South America, this species is hardy compared to many other Apistogramma and adapts well to planted community aquariums. Males display bright red coloration on both the dorsal and tail fins, giving the “Double Red” variety its name.
This species thrives in aquariums with plenty of hiding spots such as driftwood, caves, and dense plants. They are territorial during breeding but generally peaceful with other small community fish. A sandy substrate is recommended as they naturally sift through the bottom while searching for food.
Apistogramma cacatuoides prefer slightly soft, warm water and benefit from stable parameters. They are omnivores and readily accept quality pellets, frozen foods, and live foods like brine shrimp or bloodworms. With proper care, they can display fascinating breeding behavior and vibrant coloration.
