Neolamprologus brichardi – Princess of Burundi

The Neolamprologus brichardi, commonly known as the Princess of Burundi or Fairy Cichlid, is a graceful species native to Lake Tanganyika in East Africa. It is easily recognized by its elegant lyre-shaped tail, flowing fins, and subtle facial markings.

These cichlids are famous for their colony breeding behavior, where multiple generations help raise the young. This cooperative breeding makes them very interesting fish to observe in an aquarium.

Care Requirements

• Temperament: Semi-aggressive, territorial when breeding
• Diet: Omnivore (pellets, flakes, frozen foods, brine shrimp)
• Temperature: 75–80°F
• pH: 7.8–9.0
• Minimum Tank Size: 30 gallons
• Adult Size: 3–4 inches

Tank Setup

• Rocky aquascape with caves and crevices
• Sandy or fine gravel substrate
• Stable, hard alkaline water

They thrive in groups and often establish large family colonies, with older juveniles assisting in protecting new fry.
